NARM SUPERVISION DAY - COMPROMISED SUBJECTIVITY
NARCISSISM & OBJECTIFICATION
We are happy to invite you to our upcoming online event, NARM Deepening Day: Compromised Subjectivity - Narcissism & Objectification, led by Tobias Konerman.
Over the past decade, Tobias has devoted his professional research and work to exploring how developmental and collective trauma affect our ability to fully connect with our sense of self. His deep understanding of the complexities of developmental trauma, combined with his heartfelt presence, unwavering curiosity, and genuine availability, creates a transformative learning experience.
As Tobias often says, "Everything is relational. Nothing happens outside of it." What truly sets him apart is his ability to embody this sense of relatedness in every aspect of his teachings and seminars.
In therapeutic settings, the objectification that accompanies disconnection can significantly hinder the ability to access our deeper sense of self. When working with clients whose subjective sense of self is severely compromised, therapists often encounter high levels of defensiveness, countertransference, and a lack of emotional ownership. These dynamics can make it difficult to maintain a natural, intersubjective connection.
During this deepening day, we will delve into effective strategies for staying connected and present while working with compromised self-organization. Tobias will guide us in detecting subtle shifts in the therapeutic process, which can facilitate the search for agency in our clients. This work demands that we as therapists remain attuned to our own sense of self, fostering compassion for the profound suffering underlying these defensive mechanisms.
Objectification accompanies any process of disconnection. Where we objectify ourselves and others, we lack access to our subjective depth – our deeper sense of self. Therefore, any survival strategy is also a consequence of some degree of compromised depth of subjectivity.
In some clients, however, the subjective sense of self is so compromised that it can be very challenging for us as therapists to be with them. When we are dealing with narcissistic organization on the personality spectrum we are faced with high levels of defensiveness, strong countertransference and limited capacity for ownership of one’s feelings and actions. Most importantly, moments of natural resonance and intersubjective connection are rare or absent.
During this day we will explore ways in which we as therapists can stay connected and work effectively in the face of compromised self-organization and learn to detect microscopic shifts in the search for agency. This in turn requires us to remain present and connected to our own deeper sense of self and to be able to access compassion for the deep suffering that underlies these defensive strategies.
